1948 - India choked Pakistan by cutting off its water supply from river Indus and 5 of its tributaries Sutlej, Jhelum, Beas, Chenab & Ravi, resulting in the 1960 Indus water bilateral treaty between India & Pakistan, brokered by the world bank.
Fast forward to 2016, URI attack, PM Modi said ‘Blood and water can’t flow together’ promising that the Indus water treaty would be revised.
WHY IS THIS NOT BEING QUESTIONED!?
Indus water treaty and the rivers are the greatest bargain against Pakistan. The treaty allows India to use the water for non consumption purposes like irrigation, electricity production etc. India hasn’t used this treaty effectively allowing 80% water still being sent to Pakistan, on top of it we have cancelled 5 water projects on it unilaterally. WHY!?
The validity of the treaty can be questioned as it was signed by Nehru, PM back in the times. WHY!?
When the President is the head of the republic in the first place. Ayub Khan, the President of Pakistan signed it for them.
The treaty was signed to stop the formal declaration of water wars, to stop hostilities between two nations, and its clearly NOT WORKED because the person who signed it for us was not even competent authorised signatory.
We cannot outrightly violate a bilateral treaty as India is aspiring to have a permanent UNSC seat.
Least we can utilise our right over the western waters !? We can legally choke the neighbours just like 1948, without using force nor breaching any international law. India must utilise it’s right over the waters, it’s that simple and logical. This is not even a BOLD move it’s plain logic, we have utterly wise advisory to suggest this to the government, WHY aren’t we reminding the PM ‘blood and water can’t flow together’ !? Perhaps, his own statement, we MUSTN’T sit back nor de-escalate!
Investment of time in understanding our own history is the only means to make this country prosper.
